10.4.2014 COLUMBUS, OH – Saturday, Oct. 4 marked the first Red Card Cancer event host by the Capital University women’s soccer team. In addition to a win on the field, the Crusaders won the inaugural Red Card Cancer Cup for raising the most money over the course of their match against the University of Mount Union. The most notable victory, however, was the Crusaders’ and Purple Raiders’ effort in raising awareness and funds toward the battle against all forms of cancer with its donation of $1,400 dollars toward the Red Card Cancer organization.
Red Card Cancer is a call to action to help defeat the world’s biggest opponent by uniting the global game of soccer in the fight against cancer. Red Card Cancer is a community committed to raising money and awareness for cancer research at The Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Research Center through engaging and working with all levels of the greater soccer community.
Last Saturday, Mount Union and Capital had a friendly competition during their Ohio Athletic Conference opening match to see what school could fundraise more money to donate toward Red Card Cancer. To aid the effort, a commemorative t-shirt was sold and donations were accepted while Red Card Cancer wristbands were handed out.
Following the match, donations were counted and even though Capital raised more funds than Mount Union, the greater accomplishment came in knowing that $1,400 combined was raised and donated back to the Red Card Cancer organization in its fight to find a cure for all forms of cancer.
This event marked the first time Capital engaged in such an event, though it likely will not be the last.
