ANDERSON, S.C. – The Anderson University soccer and volleyball squads, yes, volleyball, are teaming up to Red Card cancer in their South Atlantic Conference contests on Saturday, Oct. 13.
“It’s a very worthwhile cause for our program to get involved with,” said men’s head soccer coach John Murphy. “My family and I have recently been impacted by breast cancer and I feel strongly that it’s something that is at the forefront of my energies right now and I want to help raise as much awareness about this disease as possible so we can help people throughout the Upstate and the entire country.”
There will be donation stations set up at Trojan Stadium and at the Abney Athletic Center where fans can donate to help Red Card Cancer during both the volleyball game and the soccer doubleheader. The Trojans will be wearing pink on their uniforms to help call attention to the cause and in addition, the volleyball team will be tossing miniature pink volleyballs to fans in attendance.

“We are grateful for foundations such as RCC which give us an opportunity to reach out to the community so that we are all able to come together and contribute to strengthening cancer research and awareness,” said women’s soccer head coach Samar Azem. “Cancer has certainly impacted many individuals who are near and dear to many of us and we want to do what we can to bring awareness to the community and assist in raising funds for cancer research. Specifically, our program would like to send a special message of love and support from our program to those who have lost loved ones to cancer and especially those who have fought or are fighting cancer.”
Pink ribbons and literature will be available to fans at both events.
“Our team is proud to help sponsor this event in conjunction with our home contest,” said volleyball head coach Craig Mosqueda. “We hope that by sponsoring this event, we help educate people about breast cancer as well as raise support for finding a cure.”
Donations will support cancer research initiatives at the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center.
